Uncle Tom’s Cabin #4

This book has pulled me in and even though it’s a pretty long book I don’t really care. I don’t want this book to end. I am only a little more then half way done with the book and I’m already out of my seat with the gruesome and unexplainable passages that were told in that story. There we some stories that just made me not want to read anymore just as much as it pulled me in… I can’t bare to think about the things they did to those poor human beings. They didn’t deserve what they got and show have been treated equally. One of the stories I read was so terrible, not because it was physical, but because of the mental abuse this little negro girl received. The white men were all seeing her so called “talents” so they’d see who would buy her and a man said he liked her so he went along and proceeded with the purchase. Whilein the process he thinks to himself for a minute and realizes that he doesn’t want her so the salesman takes her away on the journey to mind another master. She was just being looked on as a object instead of a human which destroyed me on the inside because no one deserves to be treated like that.

In a Los Angeles Times editorial by the Times Editorial Board explains a situation in California that needs fixing. They start off by talking about how the governor of California has a 169 billion dollar budget this year and despite that, still has billions of dollars in debt. The Times Editorial Board goes on to explain how we could efficiently spend this money to metaphorically speaking “flipping the budget board. Then, they go on to talk about how they should raise the state taxes so it can account to the states general fund, however if they do end up doing that it will anger the citizens of California and drive people out of the state. The things that should happen is when the tax revenue has some left over they will be planning on giving it to the schools and community colleges. I believe this is unfair because it is not enough money to keep the schools in good shape financially.

Frank Bruni, from The New York Times opinionated section says “Hillary is winning”. By this, he means that Hillary Clinton is almost invincible and will have no problem in winning the next election. He says that she came into the last election “showing fatal weakness in California” and now she is well prepared and ready for the battle. He says that she is also “winning” because of the confidence and image she sets for herself so it makes her look like the stronger candidate even though she is a women and the wife of a former president that was almost impeached in his first term. Bruni goes on for another paragraph or two speaking on behalf of Hillary Clinton and giving her the upper hand on the election.

Nicholas Kristof from New York Times expresses an opinion on how inequality is a choice. In Kristof’s editorial he quotes Lloyd Blankfein when he says “we treat is as a natural disaster”. This quote really has a lot of power to because of the context it is being used in. He wants people to understand that inequality can be controlled  by any person and is not being forced on to anyone. He finishes his essay by asking what would happen if we made inequality a priority and how to make it happen.

Interests in Uncle Tom’s Cabin

What I found really interesting in my book was how in to detail it got. It really makes you feel sympathy towards the characters in the book and makes you feel like you are in their shoes re-living their lifes. One part of the book that I found really interesting was how George was able to escape and not get caught while having people surrounding every part of the prison.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Chapter 3 Situation)

In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, I’ve gotten to chapter 4 which is where the story begins to change for the worst. In chapter 3 George goes to Eliza and tells her that he is going to try and escape because he just can’t take the torture any longer. Eliza trys to tell George to have faith in God, George’s master is asking him to take another woman as his wife. If I was in George’s position I would try my best to escape and get out of there as fast as possible. There aren’t any lawful marriages for slaves. Towards the end of the chapter George tells Eliza that he going to head north to Canada and fight for the freedom of her and Harry.

“Do you wanna lose weight fast!?” If you don’t eat organic then you’ll become obese. Most consumers don’t wanna buy organic foods because “It’s too expensive” or “I don’t have time to make food”. These are not the reasons to not eat organic. I’ve lost 2 pounds in almost 3 months of eating organic and I feel better than ever.

This world is becoming an obese place, revolved around eating foods that are not organic. We interview Tommy Billington, and asked him how much organic food he ate and he said that he never at organic. We were worried that this man wasn’t getting the right organic nutrients needed to live a healthy life. We told Tommy Billington to start eating more organic food and he said that he was going to start. Tommy Billington went to the store and bought some organic foods; he bought organic carrots, broccoli, apples, pears, and cucumbers. He was so happy that he was living healthy and his total at the grocery store was only 150 dollars for all those vegetables. We were so glad to help Tommy Billington live a healthy life. Dr. Stewart from the University of Texas at Austin says “Organic food is the only key to a healthy diet. It has proteins and enzymes that will make you stay healthy and never gain weight.”

Tommy Billington already has lost a whopping 0.4 pounds in the last 7 weeks and is feeling great. Without doing what we say, this could have never happened. This is the reason that we need to start eating organic and not go with that normal food.

Does photography limit or enhance the truth?

Do you ever look see photos as you’re walking down the street and think to yourself, “Is that what is really happening in that photo?”. I know that I do; I see so many photos a day that make me wonder what is real and not real. I believe that photography can limit and enhance our understanding in different situations by the way that we interpret the photo. I don’t believe most of the photos I see because you can never tell whether it’s telling the truth or not.

The issue that we have in society is that we can never tell whether the media is telling the truth or not. This is why I believe that photography limits our understanding of that photo and maybe even the world. In the article, “Picture Imperfect” by Jed Perl, the author states that the Obama administration is hiding the truth. She says “Is Obama administration standing in the way of the truth?” I believe that this is true because the government doesn’t want us to see everything which limits our understanding of the world. In Haggart’s arguement, he states that the photographer Ed Freeman is looking for something that was art, not sport photography. He wants the photos to be how surfing feels and not how it looks so he ended up photoshopping them. He spent hours on his computer trying to make the photos look better, but in reality he was just making the photos tell a lie. He says “wanted the pictures to be how surfing feels”, I understand why he does this, but you don’t need to do that to the photos because then you are lying to your audience and limiting their understanding.

However, when we look at a photo and it has something that we can recognize, it can enhance our understanding of the world. In the article “Exquisite Corpse” by Ashraf Rushdy, he states that a boy by the name Emmett Till was lynched and beaten until he died by a couple white men that have been lynching many innocent civilians. “See what they did to my boy”, Till’s mother had said as she showed everyone what the white men did to her son. She did this because she wanted everyone to see wanted to see the truth of what happened. This enhances the understanding of the truth because it shows how the incident really happened.

It’s also true that when we see a photo, we don’t know when it was taken and where it was taken. This is why I believe that phtotos limit our understanding of the world. In the article “This photo is lying to you” by Rob Haggart, their is a story about a man by the name of David Griffin and in this paragraph it talks about how the people that work for National Geographic are required to send in the photos they take with no editing. They do this because they want the photo to be real. National Geographic says “The magazine requires photos in raw format” which I think is a good thing because if they didn’t do this then it would limit our understanding of these photos very much. Other than National Geographic, almost every other company will edit their photos which is the wrong thing to do if you want your audience to believe what you are showing them.

The way that photos present themselves can be very tricky. We have to make sure these photos do not mess with our perspective on life and make sure we know what we are looking at. If we didn’t have photos then life would be pretty boring and we wouldn’t be able to understand most of the things we hear about, but we have to make sure that what we are looking at is telling us the truth.
